I recently discovered the troubles of bridal undergarments when I needed to figure out what I would be wearing UNDER my gown before I met with my seamstress.
Because I bought my dress consignment, I skipped out on what is typically a bridal’s first choice in undergarments from bridal boutiques such as David’s Bridal or Alfred Angelo. I went through the whole mess of trying to find something on my own before finally throwing my arms up in defeat and going into David’s and begging them to find a corset for me.
And in 20 minutes they did just that.
Before I found the perfect under-the-gown-help I needed, I spent hours at department stores and searching online. I don’t recommend it.
Trips to Sears and Kohls left me discouraged when all I found were what I have lovingly called “sausage casings.” You know, ladies. The tube-like slips that suck in all your jiggly parts and smash them to your body.
I left the mall after, in a sweaty mess, I elbowed myself in the face trying to get one of those “sausage casings” off my body.
A friend who recently got married suggested Boscovs in Lancaster County as a place that had the pretty, lacy corsets a bride dreams of. I went and tried on several with no luck — my bust being too small and my hips too big for the sizes they had available. And anyone who knows me might find this ridiculous as my body is a pretty normal shape.
With little time before my meeting with the seamstress, I was visiting a friend who used to work at a bridal boutique and after I told her my troubles she said, “Why didn’t you go to David’s?”
I didn’t know. I guess I figure if no one else had what I needed, why would they?
It turns out they have undergarments to FIT EVERYONE! I wanted to hug the clerk helping me. She even did up all the clips in the back of two corsets I tried on that day.
Her feedback was helpful, discouraging against the smoother one that bunched up on me and agreeing with me when I felt the one with boning looked better on my body.
While I thoroughly agree in cutting some corners to save some money on your wedding day, sometimes you just have to go to the professionals. I feel much more confident knowing I can find comfort and a little physical support from a corset that will fit my shape and help me look my best on the big day.
